Hiking the Lycian Way from Gocek: A Guide to the Ancient Trails

Göcek is typically associated with its turquoise waters, luxury yachts, and serene bays. However, what this seafaring town offers is not limited to that. Being adjacent to Fethiye, which hosts the most dramatic and beautiful initial stages of the legendary 540-kilometer Lycian Way stretching to Antalya, Göcek serves as a strategic base for nature and history enthusiasts. Although the Lycian Way doesn't pass directly through Göcek, you can stay here and hit the dusty ancient paths on day trips, returning to Göcek's comfortable and peaceful atmosphere in the evening.
Popular Lycian Way Trails Accessible from Göcek
Göcek's greatest advantage is its proximity—just a 30-40 minute drive—to the two most popular initial stages of the Lycian Way. Here are the famous trails you can explore on a day trip:
Fethiye (Ovacık) - Faralya: The Official Start and Iconic Views
This is the official starting point of the Lycian Way. Beginning in the Ovacık area of Fethiye, this trail takes you along the foothills of Babadağ, with breathtaking bird's-eye views of the world-famous Ölüdeniz lagoon, to the village of Faralya, situated above Butterfly Valley. Although this stage, which is about 13-14 km long, includes challenging ascents and descents, the views it offers will make you forget all your fatigue.
Getting There: You can reach the starting point in Ovacık from Göcek by private car or taxi in about 30-40 minutes. After finishing the hike in Faralya, you can take the local minibuses (dolmuş) or a taxi to Fethiye, and from there, return to Göcek.
Kayaköy - Ölüdeniz: Through History to Turquoise Waters
This is ideal for those looking for a shorter yet culturally rich route. Starting from the historic Kayaköy, which resembles a ghost town with its abandoned stone houses and churches, this trail descends through a pleasant path in pine forests to the famous Kumburnu Beach in Ölüdeniz. This easy and enjoyable 5-6 km route is especially great for those new to hiking.
Getting There: You can reach Kayaköy from Göcek by car in about 45 minutes. After finishing your walk in Ölüdeniz and enjoying the beach, you can take the minibuses from there back to Fethiye and Göcek.
Local Hiking Routes Around Göcek
If you are looking for a quieter, more local experience away from the crowds of the Lycian Way, Göcek's own surroundings are also full of ancient paths. While these routes may not have the red-and-white markers like the Lycian Way, they offer fantastic alternatives for nature walks.
Ancient Paths from Göcek to İnlice
There are multiple trails that pass over the hills surrounding Göcek, through pine forests, and lead you to İnlice Beach. These routes offer you a chance to exercise while enjoying magnificent views of Göcek Bay from the hills. Ending your hike in the cool waters of İnlice is the best reward of the day.
Practical Guide for Lycian Way Hikes
Best Time to Hike
The most ideal times for long-distance hiking in the Aegean are the cooler spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) months. The summer months (June-August) can be dangerous for long hikes due to extreme heat.
What to Bring
Good hiking shoes (ankle support is preferable), a sufficient amount of water (at least 2 liters), sunscreen, a hat, energy-boosting snacks, and layered clothing suitable for the season are essential.
Markers and Navigation
The Lycian Way is marked with international standard red and white stripes. However, trails can deteriorate over time, or markers can fade. Therefore, for your safety, it is crucial to have a GPS device or a hiking app with offline map support on your phone, such as Wikiloc or AllTrails.
Why Is Göcek the Perfect Base?
Staying in Göcek offers you the best of both worlds. During the day, you can challenge yourself on the rugged and dusty paths of the Lycian Way, tracing the footsteps of history. In the evenings, you can relax and unwind in Göcek's stylish restaurants and enjoy the tranquil atmosphere of the marina. This is the perfect holiday plan for those who want to combine adventure with comfort.
