Boat Battery Measurement Guide: Voltage Table and Capacity Test

When you hear the words “the batteries need changing”, you should have two tools to hand: a correctly read voltage table and a capacity test. From the surface-charge trap to load testing, this is a guide to reading the signs and deciding whether the battery really needs replacement.

To know how full your battery really is, you need to measure it, not guess. The simplest measurement is voltage (with a voltmeter), but on its own it can be misleading: for an accurate reading, the battery must be at rest meaning it has had no load and no charge input for at least an hour or two.

The table below converts the resting voltage of a 12 volt lead-acid battery into an approximate state of charge. The figures are for room temperature; they shift slightly in very hot or very cold conditions.

For lead-acid batteries (flooded, AGM, gel), the golden rule for battery life is no more than 50% discharge. In other words, regularly dropping below 12.2 volts quietly eats away at the battery’s life. Lithium has a completely different voltage curve; this table does not apply to lithium.

Three rules for a proper measurement

  • Let it rest: before measuring, no charging and no load for at least an hour or two.

  • Check under load separately: to see the battery’s true health, a battery monitor (a shunt that counts amp-hours) is far clearer than voltage.

  • Don’t forget age: a 5-year-old battery may still say 100 amp-hours on the label, but in reality it may only hold 60; a capacity test tells the truth.

In short, voltage gives you a quick impression, but it is the meter that settles the energy argument. A glance over morning coffee, then seeing how many amp-hours were used overnight, is the daily pulse check for battery health.

Can I measure it myself with a multimeter?+

Yes, the resting voltage — from the battery terminals, with charging and all consumers switched off. That tells you the state-of-charge trend. Load and capacity tests need specialist equipment; they are the precise measures behind the “does it need changing?” decision.

How old do batteries need to be before they should be changed?+

Age on its own is not the measure: a well-kept battery can last 7 years, while one that is dragged flat every winter may be finished in 2. The decision should be based on age + capacity percentage + how critical the battery bank is in use.

If one battery is faulty, do they all need changing?+

In the same bank (parallel group), usually yes: mixing old and new batteries will wear the new one out. Separate banks (starter/service) are assessed independently — which means the phrase “they all need changing” is not always right.

Is the table the same for AGM, gel and lithium?+

No — the chemistries have different voltage characteristics; lithium (LiFePO4) in particular has a very flat curve, so reading state of charge from voltage is misleading. For lithium, the right tool is a battery monitor with a shunt.
