What Are a Bimini and a Sprayhood?

The cockpit sunshade and windscreen - the boat’s hardest-working textile pair, and the first thing that shapes comfort on board.

Bimini ve Sprayhood Nedir? - GöcekOnline Care

There are two forms of protection for the cockpit, and they are the hardest-working textiles on the boat. The table below sets out the difference between them.

Bimini - sprayhood

Equipment

What it does

Bimini

A folding canopy that protects the cockpit from the sun

Sprayhood (hood)

A semi-fixed screen at the companionway that cuts wind and spray

In the Aegean sun, a bimini is not a comfort item but essential safety kit; a sprayhood makes the cockpit liveable in the early season and when sailing to windward in the meltemi. Both are exposed all year round to UV, salt and wind; the fastest-ageing parts of the boat are the fabric and the stitching.

Good maintenance is the art of saving the stitching and zips before the cloth: while the fabric may still be sound, UV breaks down the thread, and early re-stitching is far cheaper than a full replacement. Clear panels scratch and turn cloudy under UV; anything other than fresh water and a soft cloth will do damage.

Two habits can double their life: a fresh-water rinse at the end of the season followed by storage only once completely dry, and taking the bimini off for the winter and keeping it indoors. A canopy left up through the winter on the mooring will age for no good reason.
