What Is Ceramic Coating on a Boat?

A hard protective layer that chemically bonds to gelcoat - a modern option that lasts for years, not just the few months of a traditional wax.

Seramik Kaplama (Tekne) Nedir? - GöcekOnline Care

Ceramic coating is a silica-based liquid that cures on the surface as a hard, transparent layer: traditional wax sits on top, while ceramic forms a chemical bond. The result is protection measured in years rather than months, strong water beading, and dirt that has a harder time sticking.

The table below compares the two.

High, but it reduces polishing cycles

From a gelcoat budget point of view, the logic is simple: the longer the protective layer lasts, the less often you need aggressive polishing. But there are two conditions: the surface must be perfect before application (put ceramic over a dulled surface and it will preserve that dullness for years), and the idea that it means 'no maintenance ever again' is wrong - it just makes the washing routine easier.

The one non-negotiable in application is the quality of surface preparation; the installer’s workmanship matters more than the coating brand. It is not applied to non-slip deck surfaces, as it makes them slippery.
