What Is a Macerator Pump?
An electric pump that grinds waste so it can be pushed through a small-diameter hose - the hardest-worked, shortest-lived component in the waste system.
A macerator is an electric pump that grinds waste with a small-bladed rotor and then forces it through a narrow hose under pressure. It is used inside electric toilets and for discharging a waste tank in permitted areas. It is the hardest-working and most delicate part of the system.
Its rubber impeller will not tolerate dry running for more than a few seconds, and its blades can be jammed by foreign objects (wet wipes are the classic culprit).
Common problems
Dry running: a pump left running on an empty tank will burn out its impeller in no time; discharge should always be done while keeping watch, and the pump switched off as soon as the sound changes.
Seizure: a foreign object jams the blades and trips the motor fuse; the answer is not to simply replace the fuse, but to open the pump and remove the obstruction.
Long periods idle: a macerator that has not run at all through the season can have its rubber parts stick; a short test run before first use is good practice.
Keeping a macerator service kit on the spares shelf — impeller plus seal — is cheaper than a breakdown call-out. And the golden rule still applies here: anything the pump cannot grind should never have been put down the toilet in the first place.
