What Is a Stern Drive?
A system that transfers the engine’s power from inside the boat to the moving drive unit on the transom — the standard for sports boats, and a real test for bellows maintenance.

A stern drive (inboard-outboard or Z-drive) is a system where the engine sits inside the boat aft and its power is transferred through a transom-mounted linkage to the movable drive unit outside. The drive both turns and trims: the manoeuvrability of an outboard is combined with the power of an inboard engine.

Bellows are the rubber parts at the transom penetration and are replaced on a scheduled basis; a cracked bellows is a direct route for seawater into the boat.
If left raised, the drive slowly eats into bellows life. The drive itself is aluminium living underwater, so anode and paint discipline must be just as strict as on a saildrive.
