What Is a Bollard?
A twin-arm metal fitting used to secure a line to the boat - one of the first pieces anyone who knows mooring learns about.
A bollard is a twin-arm (T-shaped) metal fitting on deck used for securing a line. The line is fastened with turns taken around it; a proper turn holds firm under load but can still be released when needed. The whole of the mooring load is carried by this small fitting and the bolts beneath it.
Most stories of mooring gear failing in a blow start not with the line, but with the wrong turn or a tired bollard fitting.
Turns and annual checks
Correct turns: an over-layered ‘clove hitch-style’ turn will not come apart in an emergency; a few crossed turns, then a locking turn, are enough.
Base check: once a year, inspect under the deck; are the bolts and backing plate sound? A loose bollard becomes a leak point into the deck.
Sharp edge: worn metal edges cut the line like a saw; smooth them off or use a line sleeve.
And when preparing for bad weather, remember: do not tie two lines to the same bollard; use separate points. Guardrails are not for leaning on or for tying fenders to; those loads belong on the cleat and the bollard.
