What Is a Scupper?
Drain openings that send deck water back overboard — when they block, they can turn the cockpit into a bath, making them one of the cheapest but most critical bits of maintenance.
A scupper is the hole and drain channel that lets water from the deck and cockpit (rain, spray, wash-down water) drain back overboard. A cockpit is like a basin that can take water at sea, and scuppers are its only way out.
The design brief is based on 'emptying a flooded cockpit within minutes'. A blocked scupper ruins that calculation: in a wet winter, water building up in the cockpit of a boat lying in a marina can rise over the coaming and run down into the cabin.
Common issues
Leaf blockage: a winter classic, especially on berths under trees; it needs weekly checks.
Hose and clamp ageing: cockpit scupper hoses run close to the waterline; a split hose turns the scupper into a water ingress route.
Strainer loss: a missing scupper strainer is an open invitation to blockages.
Many 'flooded cabin at the end of winter' cases start with a blocked scupper. It is one of the cheapest maintenance routines: at every boat visit, a quick look at the scuppers plus a bucket-flow test. That is why scupper checks are always on the list during Care winter rounds; a five-second glance is cheaper than the bill for drying out a cabin.
