What Is a Tirhandil?

A balanced, seamanlike Aegean classic with a sharp bow and stern - long overshadowed by the gulet, now gaining collector value for its wooden elegance.

Tirhandil Nedir? - GöcekOnline Care

A tirhandil is a traditional Aegean wooden boat with a sharp bow and stern (double-ended), a broad, deep hull and strong seakeeping; its roots lie in sponge fishing and coastal transport. It differs from a gulet in its form: a gulet is a volume boat with a broad transom stern, while a tirhandil favours seamanship with its symmetrical ends.

It is being rediscovered as the 'true seaman's' classic of Aegean boat culture. In ownership terms, the same rules as for a gulet apply: proper wooden-boat discipline, caulking, varnish cycles and close watch for woodworm.

Buying and maintenance

  • Restoration trap: A tired tirhandil bought 'cheap' can quickly turn into a joinery project that triples the purchase price.

  • Craftsman network: There are fewer craftsmen left who understand traditional wooden boat work, so the maintenance plan needs to be set early around the yard's schedule.

  • Originality balance: Adding modern comfort without upsetting the boat's character and balance takes real skill.

Its smaller size (8-12 m) makes it a far more manageable entry point into wooden-boat ownership than a gulet. A well-restored, properly documented tirhandil may look expensive, but it is good value; the truly costly ones are the ones that become 'projects'.
