What Is a Guardrail/Stanchion System?
The stanchions and wire lifelines around the deck - the last physical barrier against a fall overboard, and the bit of safety kit most often forgotten when it comes to maintenance.
A guardrail system is made up of stainless stanchions around the edge of the deck, the wires run between them, and the end fittings at bow and stern. It is the last physical barrier against falling overboard, and it is always the one that takes the load suddenly, at the worst possible moment.
At that point, it is usually not the wire that gives way, but the stanchion base on deck or the wire’s swage terminal. The table below sets out the points to check.

A five-minute check at the start of the season: grip each stanchion and give it a shake, inspect every terminal closely, and open and close the gates. The real safety is not in the visible wire, but in the hidden connections.
And one rule: the guardrail is not there for leaning on or for tying fenders to; those loads belong on the cleats and mooring bitts. The guardrail is there so nobody goes overboard.
