Boat Insurance Guide: Cover, Premiums and Claims

It is an expensive lesson to find out what your boat policy does and does not cover on the day of the loss, not on the day you buy it. This guide explains cover types, the factors that affect the premium, the logic of excess, and the documents that strengthen your hand in a claim in plain language.

Boat insurance is the basic safeguard against the sea’s unpredictability, and marina contracts often make it mandatory as well. But saying 'I have insurance' is not enough; what really matters is what the policy covers, in which area, and for what kind of use.

The table below sets out the main cover headings.

Main covers

Cover

What it covers

Boat hull cover

The boat itself: collision, fire, sinking, storm damage

Third-party liability

Damage caused to another boat or person

Salvage / towage

Salvage and towage costs (depends on the policy)

Personal belongings

Tender, engine and equipment (must be listed separately)

The points most often missed are the policy limits: navigation area (Turkish waters, the Greek Islands and offshore cruising may differ), use (private/charter) and crew requirements. Tenders and outboard engines are excluded from the definition of 'boat' in many policies and must be specified separately.

When a claim happens, two things are critical: the correct insured value (under-insuring means under-settlement, over-insuring means wasted premium) and prompt notification. If storm season is coming, knowing your policy’s salvage and towage clause can prevent arguments when it matters most. Policy details and terms should always be confirmed with the insurer.

Frequently asked questions

Is boat insurance compulsory?+

Hull insurance is not a legal requirement; however, marinas usually require valid liability cover as part of the contract, and financed boats are generally required to have hull cover. In practice, insurance is effectively essential for any boat kept in a marina.

What does the premium depend on?+

It depends on the boat’s value, age, type, cruising area, berthing/winter storage arrangements and claims history. Accurate disclosure is crucial: anything at odds with the declared cruising area or winter lay-up can lead to a cover dispute at claim stage.

What happens if the insurer says there has been neglect of maintenance?+

The burden of proof largely comes down to paperwork: dated inspection records, invoices and photographs will rebut an allegation of neglect. If the boat has been maintained without records, you are usually left with little more than your own word against the insurer’s challenge.

What should I do first in the event of a claim?+

First make the boat safe and prevent further damage, then photograph everything, notify the insurer within the policy’s reporting period, and do not start repairs until the surveyor process is clear — if urgent work is needed, have it carried out and fully documented.

Is newly fitted equipment included in the cover?+

Not automatically: electronics, solar gear and other items added later must be endorsed on the policy. Keeping invoices and installation records makes life easier here as well.
