A thermostat is the automatic valve that keeps an engine at its correct operating temperature. While the engine is warming up, it circulates water through the bypass; once temperature is reached, it opens and allows full circulation. Its job is to bring the engine up to working temperature quickly and keep it there.
It acts as a two-way gatekeeper, and it fails in two different ways. The table below shows this.

“My engine never gets hot, that’s good” is actually a fault report: a diesel running cold burns inefficiently, acid condensation starts in the cylinders, glazing begins, and service life quietly shortens.
The thermostat is a cheap, long-life part; as standard practice, it should be renewed during any major cooling-system service (heat exchanger cleaning, antifreeze renewal) while the system is already open.
